Jarrow based, UTS Engineering, has been recognised for its ongoing investment in its health and safety procedures by partner, Welsh Water.
The company was presented with a health and wellbeing award following the adoption of its innovative Q2 vibration monitoring system, which enables accurate exposure to vibration levels to be monitored and managed effectively. Combined with other arrangements, including tool selection and specific training, this enables UTS to minimise exposure to potentially harmful levels of vibration.
Q2 devices detect vibration levels, warning users when they are at certain levels of vibration exposure.
The award, presented by Linda Williams, people and change director at Welsh Water, highlights the commitment of companies who are proactively seeking new and innovative ways to protect and enhance the health and wellbeing of their employees.
A strong list of companies were nominated for the award, including the Welsh Water retail team for its mental health and wellbeing project and Morrisons Utility Services for its Your Health Matters scheme.
UTS Engineering produces a vast range of couplings, flange adapters and repair clamps for customers that are predominantly in the UK utilities sector. Its unique selling point is having the capability to provide almost any product for the piping industry, to incorporate tailor-made solutions and to fabricate its products to suit any size of diameter and oval pipes, if required.

Norman Thompson, UTS group health and safety manager said: “The Q2 provides employer and employee with accurate data, ensuring we take a proactive approach to monitoring and minimising exposure to certain levels of hand and arm vibration.
“The health and safety of the UTS team is paramount and this is the only personal vibration monitor that measures actual vibration emissions. A traffic light system alerts operatives whenever they reach an exposure level. This allows individuals to avoid excessive levels of vibration, allowing them to avoid risking vibration associated injuries and conditions.”
